6 October – Liberation of Istanbul
The 103rd anniversary of Istanbul’s liberation from occupation was commemorated on Tuesday, 6 October, with the participation of our middle and high school students. The ceremony explored the historical journey from the years of occupation to 6 October 1923, when Istanbul regained its freedom, drawing on the city’s sounds, streets, and collective memory. As we commemorated with respect and gratitude the heroes who fought for the independence of Istanbul and our country, our students revisited the key milestones of the historical journey from the Turkish War of Independence to the liberation of Istanbul through specially prepared videos and narratives. The determination and unwavering belief in independence embodied in Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s words, “They will leave as they came,” were highlighted, while a piano rendition of “Bülbülüm Altın Kafeste” (The Nightingale in the Golden Cage) conveyed through music the emotions of Istanbul’s journey from occupation to liberation. The ceremony concluded by emphasizing the importance of knowing our history, understanding the value of our independence, and carrying the legacy entrusted to us into the future.
