7th Grade Yeldeğirmeni – Mural Field Trip

As part of the interdisciplinary “Art as Critique” unit jointly conducted by the English and Visual Arts departments, our Grade 7 students participated in an educational field trip to the Yeldeğirmeni district of Kadıköy. Designed to support experiential and cross-curricular learning, the visit provided students with the opportunity to analyze works of art in authentic settings while developing their critical thinking and interpretation skills.

Throughout the excursion, students explored the vibrant street murals created by local and international artists that have transformed Yeldeğirmeni into an open-air art gallery. By examining the visual language, symbolism, composition, and messages conveyed through the artworks, students gained a deeper understanding of art as a powerful form of cultural, social, and personal expression.

Students responded to reflection and evaluation questions while standing in front of the artworks, encouraging them to analyze, interpret, and discuss different perspectives. This activity strengthened their critical thinking, observation, and communication skills while helping them connect classroom learning in English and Visual Arts to real-world experiences.

In line with the educational vision of Irmak Schools, which aims to nurture inquisitive, reflective, creative, and globally minded learners, this field trip provided an authentic learning opportunity beyond the classroom. Students experienced the transformative role of public art, expanded their cultural awareness, and explored the universal language of artistic expression.

Through this meaningful experience, our students discovered how art can inspire inquiry, encourage dialogue, and foster a deeper understanding of the world around them.
