A Science Journey at Santral Istanbul

As part of the PYP unit “How the World Works,” Grade 3 students from Irmak Okulları visited the SantralIstanbul Energy Museum to explore the central idea: “Electricity is one of the forms of energy used in daily life.”

Supporting experiential and inquiry-based learning, the trip included participation in the museum’s Primary School Energy Workshop as well as a guided tour of the historic Silahtarağa Power Plant, the first power plant in Türkiye, which now serves as a museum. Through this experience, students observed the historical development of electricity generation and energy production technologies.

During the visit, students explored important questions such as:

  • “What is electricity?”
  • “How is electricity generated?”
  • “How was energy produced in the past?”
  • “How should energy be produced today?”
  • “Why should we use energy efficiently?”

By observing, questioning, and researching, students gained valuable knowledge about energy production, sustainability, and responsible energy consumption.

In line with the educational vision of Irmak Okulları, which encourages students to become inquisitive, environmentally conscious, and lifelong learners, this educational experience helped students develop scientific thinking, observation skills, and awareness about sustainable living.

Through this meaningful field trip, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of energy in everyday life while recognizing the value of energy conservation and sustainable resource use.
