Unknown Islands
“Even dreaming of setting out can be as beautiful, necessary, fascinating and exciting as pursuing a goal, reaching a goal, longing for a reunion.”
Our 9th grade students were inspired by the characters of Jose Saramago’s The Tale of the Unknown Island, which they read as part of their Turkish language and literature course, a man who had the courage to search for an unknown island at a time when it was believed that there were no unknown islands left, and a woman who believed that she could change her life by seeing such courage, and embarked on a journey in their imagination. The destination at the end of this journey was the island of their dreams. Our students, who created colorful island designs in this project where they could use any material they wanted, experienced the importance of being courageous and dreaming.
