Where Space Meets Time: Fener–Balat CAS Trip

On Friday, 20 February, DP2 students of Irmak Schools participated in the CAS field trip titled “Where Space Meets Time: Fener–Balat.” Throughout the day, the urban fabric, historical heritage, and cultural diversity of the district were observed on site; analyses were conducted regarding the architectural character and collective memory of the area. All planned academic and experiential activities were implemented in accordance with the programme framework.

During the trip, the three CAS strands were addressed through an integrated approach. Within the scope of Creativity, students engaged in a tile workshop, street photography practices, and creative writing activities. The Activity component was fulfilled through a structured walking exploration of the district. Under the Service strand, contributions were made to the Fener–Balat Architectural Restoration Project and a digital photography exhibition initiative; students delivered short presentations at selected locations, highlighting their cultural and historical significance. Key sites included Fener District, Balat District, the Golden Horn, the Bulgarian Iron Church (Sveti Stefan), Maraşlı Primary School, examples of Greek civil architecture, Fener Greek High School, the Fener Greek Patriarchate, and the Balat Merdivenli Street.

The field trip was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) was addressed through raising awareness of urban heritage preservation; SDG 4 (Quality Education) was supported through experiential and place-based learning; and SDG 15 (Life on Land) was considered in relation to urban environmental awareness and sustainable use of space. Through this structured field study, students’ cultural heritage sensitivity, research competencies, and sense of social responsibility were further strengthened.
