Mathematical Modeling Activity with Linear Regression Analysis

Our 9th and 10th grade students started their mathematical modeling studies with an in-class activity in their mathematics lessons. In this activity within the scope of Pi Day activities, instead of using ready-made data, our students recorded the data obtained by measuring the circumference and diameter of circular objects of different sizes that they brought to the classroom with the list functions on their graphing calculators. Our students obtained the relationship between diameter and circumference in this data, which they created a scatter plot, by linear regression analysis and obtained the approximate value of Pi as the slope of this line.
