Depiction of the Beloved in Divan Poetry

The lover’s hair is fragrant, long and black as the poet’s fortune, her teeth are pearls, her eyes are large and elliptical in appearance, her eyelashes are sharp as a sword, her waist is thin and graceful, her chest is white like jasmine, delicate and smooth, the way she walks is the symbol of nobility and balance…

Based on this perfect depiction of the beloved in divan poetry, our 10th grade students in the Turkish language and literature course experienced the depiction of the beloved of that day from today’s perspective. In the pictures they drew based on mazmuns, which are stereotypical expressions, they saw that the concept of a single type of lover in divan poetry does not prevent originality.
