Geography in the Colours of Istanbul
Grade 11 student İpek Erkin created an original oil painting based on the themes of ‘change’, “sustainability” and ‘urban geography’ as part of her geography course project assignment. In this work titled ‘Istanbul’s Past and Present’, she interpreted the historical development of the city and the transformation of natural and human elements over time in an aesthetic language. The narrative, which extends from the historical peninsula to today’s skyscrapers, offers the viewer the opportunity to visually examine the changes in the geographical structure of Istanbul.
In this work, İpek emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary thinking by drawing attention to the strong relationship between art and different disciplines. Her artistic approach to concepts such as urbanisation, population growth and environmental sustainability took her project beyond a mere course work. We congratulate İpek for her creative and in-depth work and hope that her work will inspire other students.
